WEST LEIGH RAILWAY

A branch line from Pennington to connect with the Eccles, Tyldersley and Wigan Railway at Bickershaw Junction was opened for goods trains in 1885. In 1903 a connection was made with the Bedford Leigh Railway, avoiding Pennington, and connecting Leigh directly with Manchester and Wigan. It remained in use as a passenger route until 1939, and has since been dismantled.
