Section 3 - Housesteads Crags E of Milecastle 37 - S Face

From the junction with the Milecastle wall E at NY78516870 to the junction with the field wall at NY78586875, Housesteads plantation. Length 202m, av width 1.85m, av height 1.20m, 6-8 courses. This section of Wall is remarkable for the number of vertical offsets it contains. The turf cap has been heavily eroded and has been largely replaced by gravel.
1: 18m, to the bend, 1-3 Roman courses, bad bulge at bend with potholes in graveled Wall top (Clayton Wall Survey A23)
2: 32m, to E facing vertical offset, almost total rebuild, Wall top heavily eroded (Clayton Wall Survey A23, A22)
3: 5m, to W facing vertical offset, 3 Roman courses with traces of hard mortar, offset stone at E end on bottom course (Clayton Wall Survey A21).
4: 9.90m, to W facing vertical offset, 2 Roman courses (Clayton Wall Survey A20).
5: 2.10m, to E facing vertical offset, 2 Roman courses (Clayton Wall Survey A19)
6: 22.3m, to W facing vertical offset, 2 Roman courses (Clayton Wall Survey A18).
7: 2.91m, to junction with field wall, 2 Roman courses (Clayton Wall Survey A17).
