Multi-phase site including the earthwork remains of a multi-phase multivallate Iron Age hillfort, which overlies a Neolithic causewayed enclosure. A Neolithic bank barrow, which post-dates the causewayed enclosure, is extant as an earthwork. A late Roman temple, uncovered by excavation, is among the most prominent features in the interior. Maiden Castle has seen two major programmes of excavation. The first, by Mortimer Wheeler, occurred between 1934 and 1937, and the second in 1985-6. The hillfort environs have also been examined via several other excavation and fieldwalking projects. Details of the constituent parts of the site are given in the child records.
