The Hospital of St Mary, or Maison Dieu, which now forms part of the town hall buildings. Founded early 13th century by Hubert de Burgh and dissolved in 1544. During the 13th century the Maison Dieu Hall was added to the Maison Dieu for the maintenance of the of the poor and infirm. This hall has now been entirely destroyed. De Burghs Maison Dieu stood on the site of the present town hall with a small pre-1227 chapel projecting at one end, which became the Magistrates Court in 1836. Behind this is a hall with a tower dating from the time of Edward I which was restored between 1852 and 1862.
