Late 6th and 7th century Saxon inhumation cemetery and grave goods found at the Rondeau estate in 1869, 1879-80 and 1927. Finds included a sword, spears, a Group 7 shield boss, ear-ring, a chatelaine, needles and a pottery bottle.

Excavations in advance of the construction of the M3 motorway discovered a Romano British trackway and inhumation cemetery dating from the 2nd to the late 4th century. A Roman ditch was also found and Neolithic and Bronze Age pits and scoops.

BUTTS HILL BARROW

Site of a round barrow levelled in 1815, it contained a possible Bronze Age cremation and Early Medieval intrusive inhumations. Early Medieval inhumations were also found near the barrow, all laid neatly in rows, some with armour.
